If you are reading a post that frames the EU datacenter split as breaking news, check the date before you restructure anything. The retrievable record places the EU split in April 2019 and the Chaos relocation to Europe in 2015. There is no current EU datacenter split to react to. The operational lesson it left behind is permanent, and that is what this article is about.
The two structural facts that govern EU recruiting today
Two Lodestone pages define the containers your guild actually lives in.
First, a Free Company is a same-World community. The Community Finder describes it as “a community to play together with friends on the same World,” with benefits including a dedicated chat channel, the ability to purchase an estate, and free company actions. Linkshells allow communication with players on the same World. Cross-world Linkshells allow communication with players on the same data center, and players can join multiple linkshells. Community Finder
Second, the Server Status page draws the line explicitly. Matchmaking, party recruitment, cross-world linkshells, PvP teams, and fellowships are accessible on the logical data center you belong to. Free Companies, Linkshells, retainers, and housing are accessible on your Home World. Server Status
The consequence: your FC roster and your DC-wide recruiting surface are two different containers with two different failure modes. An FC cannot span Chaos and Light. A CWLS can span one logical data center but not both. If your EU roster has members on both, FC membership alone cannot hold it together.
What actually happened, with dates
Light was implemented on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Free World transfers were offered for approximately two weeks after implementation. Lodestone, 2019
Before that, the Chaos data center was transferred from North America to Europe. The Worlds subject to transfer were Cerberus, Lich, Moogle, Odin, Phoenix, Ragnarok, Shiva, and Zodiark. Players residing in Europe were expected to experience reduced network latency and lag on Worlds within Chaos. Lodestone, 2015
New Worlds Spriggan (Chaos) and Twintania (Light) were added to the European data centers following maintenance on June 18, 2019, with residential areas unavailable at launch. Lodestone, 2019
Those are the dates. If a post you are reading does not carry them, it is not describing a live event.
The decision worksheet
Before you write a single recruiting line, answer five questions. This is a worksheet, not a survey. Write the answers down.
- List your members’ Worlds and primary languages.
- Mark which Worlds sit on Chaos and which sit on Light.
- Mark which members are on the same World as your FC estate.
- Identify anyone whose only tie to the guild is the CWLS, not the FC.
- Decide: standardize on one logical data center, or accept a two-DC footprint and staff both.
Question four is the one most leaders skip. A member who joined through the CWLS and never transferred to your World is not an FC member. They are a community member with a different relationship to your guild. That distinction matters when you plan events, when you assign company actions, and when you count who will still be there after a World move.
The two-layer model
Treat the FC and the CWLS as two layers with different jobs.
FC layer: housing, company actions, company credits, dedicated chat, same-World only. This is where your estate lives, where your company credits accumulate, and where the people who show up to scheduled content actually sit.
CWLS layer: DC-wide chat and recruiting reach. Joinable in multiples. Not a substitute for FC membership. It is the only container that spans the DC boundary within one logical data center, and even it does not span between different data centers.
Consider a hypothetical: a 60-member FC with 12 members on the other EU logical DC. Those 12 cannot use FC chat. They cannot earn company credits. They cannot access the estate. They can join a CWLS on their own DC, but messages cannot be sent or received between cross-world linkshells of differing data centers, and cross-world linkshells cannot be created while visiting another data center. So a two-DC guild needs two CWLSs, two recruiting surfaces, and an explicit statement of what a member on the far side gives up. That statement is not a warning. It is a service. Members who understand the boundary make better decisions about where to park their character.
Transfer mechanics worth remembering
The 2019 transfer window is the closest thing to a template for how a future migration would be cushioned. It is not a promise that the same terms would apply again. But the shape is worth knowing.
Players could carry up to 999,999,999 gil to their new World. Estate owners had the full cost of the land returned plus 3,000,000 gil to compensate for lost furnishings. Apartment owners had the full purchase price of 500,000 gil returned plus 500,000 gil for lost furnishings. Lodestone, 2019
Re-transfer cooldowns differed by destination. Players transferring to Standard Worlds could not transfer again until three days had passed. Those transferring to Preferred Worlds could not transfer again for ninety days. Lodestone, 2019
One thing the record does not show: a confirmed method for moving the Free Company itself, with housing, from one World to another. A 2017 forum thread shows a player asking how a free company server transfer is performed, and another player replying that “right now you can’t transfer an FC and we don’t know for sure if/when we will.” Square Enix forum, 2017 Treat that thread as evidence of uncertainty, not as policy. We cannot verify whether the situation has changed since — here is our reasoning: no retrieved official source addresses FC-level transfers, so the safe planning assumption is that the organization does not move as a unit.
What the Community Finder actually gives you
The Community Finder is not a bulletin board. It is a filterable database, and its filter vocabulary is itself a recruiting brief.
Recruiters can filter by listing type (Free Company, LS & CWLS, PvP Team), by tags including Multilingual, by active hours on weekdays and weekends, by active-member count bands, by recruitment parameters, and by primary language (Japanese, English, German, French). Community Finder
As of the retrieved snapshot, the EU listing set included Free Companies and Cross-world Linkshells tagged with languages such as EN, DE, FR, JA, and Russian, and with tags including Multilingual, Work-life Balance, and High-end Duties. Community Finder
If the tool lets you filter by primary language and by active hours, then a listing that omits language coverage and timezone coverage is competing on the wrong axis. Write the listing so a reader on the other EU logical DC can tell, in one screen, whether they are in scope. State your logical DC. State your active hours in CET. State which languages your officers actually speak, not which ones you wish they spoke.
The copy-paste artifact: EU DC posture sheet
Fill this in and pin it in your officer channel. It is the document you consult before you write recruiting copy, before you schedule cross-DC events, and before you promise anyone anything.
EU DC POSTURE SHEET
Chosen logical DC: [Chaos / Light / Both]
World list:
- [World name] — [member count] — [primary languages]
- [World name] — [member count] — [primary languages]
Language coverage:
- Officers fluent in: [list]
- Listing languages: [list]
- Voice comms languages: [list]
CWLS name and join path:
- [CWLS name] — [how to request invite]
- [Second CWLS name if two-DC] — [how to request invite]
FC application path:
- [Where to apply] — [who reviews] — [expected response time]
What a member on the other DC gives up:
- FC chat: [yes/no]
- Company actions: [yes/no]
- Company credits: [yes/no]
- Estate access: [yes/no]
- CWLS chat with this DC: [yes/no]
Review date: [date]
The last section is the one that prevents surprises. A member who reads it before transferring knows exactly what they are choosing. A member who reads it after transferring knows exactly what they lost. The first is a recruitment tool. The second is a retention problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a new EU datacenter split happening? No retrieved source supports that. The retrievable record places the EU split in April 2019 and the Chaos relocation to Europe in 2015. If you see a post claiming otherwise, check its date.
Can I move my Free Company to another World? No retrieved official source confirms a method for FC-level transfers. A 2017 forum thread shows players asking and receiving no confirmed answer. Plan as if the organization does not move as a unit.
Can a CWLS span Chaos and Light? No. Cross-world linkshells are organized by data center. Messages cannot be sent or received between cross-world linkshells of differing data centers.
What does a member on the other EU logical DC lose? FC chat, company actions, company credits, estate access, and the ability to join or leave the FC while visiting. They can still join a CWLS on their own DC.
Should we standardize on one DC or accept two? That depends on your roster. If more than a handful of members are on the other DC and cannot move, a two-DC footprint with two CWLSs and two recruiting surfaces is the honest structure. If the far-side group is small and transient, standardizing on one DC and treating the CWLS as a feeder channel is simpler to staff.
What should our recruiting listing say first? Your logical DC, your active hours, and your language coverage. Those are the three filters a reader on the other DC will apply before they read anything else.
